I don’t watch much television, I do love to read, and I use the internet all the time, I’m fond of radio too, if a t.v. is on I’ll sway towards the news or a film – but I am not generally the one holding the remote! So often I am reading while my wife watches TV, her fondness for ‘reality tv’ is incredible, there is the show where celebrities go live in the jungle, or they learn to dance/ice skate, the old reliable is ‘Big Brother’ and of course those of people who lose weight or get surgery make-overs etc. but one thing that I don’t understand is why there is no ‘reality web’ effort by sites like youtube?
Youtube is one of the most popular sites on the web, wouldn’t it be interesting if they ran a talent show where everybody gets to be a part of it? Get a team of regular people who filter say ten videos and pick their favourite two, these go forward to the Channel on youtube running the show. From there people can vote and narrow down the field and eventually you have say fifty contestants and they blog about their day and do a small web-cam diary and essentially you get the experience of reality tv but with some of the personal decision making advantages of the web, you get to choose which videos you will watch and the people you want to follow the most.
You could have all sorts of specialist shows running at the same time, one for music, another for magic tricks, whatever takes a persons fancy, heck, maybe after a while people could start their own and build their own community around it.
You could cross promote with twitter or facebook and take what is a tv only concept at the moment and turn it into a web based success. A simple way to start might be a competition to cover a song by Bob Dylan or something, big brands might want to get some on screen advertising or sponsor the event, you could also get a talent scout to watch and upload their opinion, anyway, the options are endless so the question is ‘when will it all begin?’.
