Newstalk Breakfast had Karl Deeter on to discuss the costs of building apartments in Ireland and what some of the issues are with the construction industry in general.
In an interview that drew a massive listener reaction, Pat Kenny interviewed Karl Deeter about the reasons he believes we need to get people back to work sooner rather than later. We would stress the point that this isn’t implied as doing so in a reckless manner, hand hygiene, distancing and other protocols already being followed in shops and essential services jobs would be required. Dr. Sam McConkey was also on to critique his view. The debate was well rounded and respectful, you can listen to the clip below.
We were part of a discussion around Covid19 and mortgages on Matt Cooper’s ‘The Last Word’ show on Today FM yesterday. The other participant was Brian Hayes of the Banking and Payments Federation of Ireland.
For our part we were impressed with the fact that the banks have been able to do more than 2,000 mortgage restructures per working day since the pandemic driven mortgage breaks were announced. To put that in perspective, it took six years to do 100,000 restructures after the financial crisis. This time around that figure could be achieved in a little over two months, that is something to be commended.
We were guests on Matt Cooper’s ‘The Last Word’ show on Today FM along with Marian Finnegan the MD of SherryFitzgerald’s residential business to discuss the residential property market and how it might work out in the wake of the covid19 pandemic.
Marian gave good analysis as you’d expect, Karl was pointing out that supply shortages would persist despite any changes that may occur in prices, the reasons for this being that the dynamics that existed prior to it hadn’t changed.

We did a piece with Pat Kenny on his Newstalk radio show yesterday. We talked about the reasons for why property prices may face a short term volatility but that when balanced against housing need in general that the pandemic will not make housing more affordable in the long term. For that to happen we need many other things to start to resolve such as land prices, non-construction costs and planning timelines.
The Today Show with Sean O’Rourke had us on to discuss an article written by Charlie Weston in the Indpendent about the strong level of cash buyers in the Irish property market. Marie Sherlock from Siptu the trade union was also on, what followed was a robust conversation where there was some interesting debate but also a lot of agreement on the problems, symptoms and solutions to the ills of the Irish property market.
This was an interesting conversation that we took part in, it wasn’t about mortgages or property for a change! It was about whether political correctness has gone too far. Karl Deeter was asked to discuss this from the perspective that perhaps it has, as a believer in freedom of speech he argued that it has along with Larissa Nolan and saying that it hasn’t was done by Collete Browne of the Independent and Peter Kavanagh from the Green Party.
Comedian Deirdre O’Kane and Karl Deeter were on Matt Cooper’s ‘Last Word’ last week to take part in the ‘Friday Panel’ which is a segment of the show that goes through the big stories of the week. There were lots of topics covered, presidential elections, property protests and parenting tips!
Newstalk’s ‘Lunchtime’ with Ciara Kelly did a piece on new wealth statistics issued by the Central Bank which featured Karl Deeter from Irish Mortgage Brokers. It looked at the average wealth per person in Ireland and the point was made that property was a very large component of it. Other things that affect wealth were also discussed as well as some of the problems around using ‘averages’ to describe anything.
We were happy to take part in a more light hearted segment of radio on Today FM when Matt Cooper had Karl Deeter in to discuss different news items from the week that was. He was joined by the journalist Larissa Nolan to discuss many different topics from ‘beer goggles’ to property prices and slavery.
